Sport Concussion Management

Our team is dedicated to providing unmatched care for sports-related concussions. Our residency-trained and board-certified clinicians understand the importance of a comprehensive approach to concussion management, combining early and individualized care, manual therapy, and a safe return to sport. We aim to help athletes recover fully and safely from concussions, ensuring optimal performance and long-term well-being.

What is Sports Related Concussion (SRC)?

Sports-related Concussions (SRCs) are traumatic brain injuries that occur as a result of a direct or indirect blow to the head, which causes a cascade of neurological signs and symptoms that we commonly associate with concussions. Some of the common symptoms include headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light/sound, and drowsiness.

SRCs are most common in boys football and girls soccer, however, head injuries can occur in all sports and should be treated just as seriously in every instance. When a concussion is suspected, IMMEDIATE REMOVAL from play is imperative to ensure that serious brain injury is avoided.

Management of Concussion

Immediately following a concussive event, prompt and effective management is crucial. At Trifecta Therapeutics, we prioritize the well-being of our patients and take proactive measures to address the acute and subacute phases of concussion. Our clinicians are experienced in assessing and managing concussions, utilizing the latest evidence-based protocols to get our athletes back to sport safely. Important aspects include:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: Our clinicians conduct thorough assessments to assess the severity and impact of concussion symptoms. We consider various factors such as cognitive function, balance, coordination, and other neuromusculoskeletal factors to guide our treatment approach.

  • Symptom Management: We employ personalized strategies to manage the wide range of symptoms associated with concussions, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties.

  • Rest and Recovery: After a mild traumatic brain injury, or mTBI (such as a sport-related concussion), proper rest is essential for the brain to heal. We provide guidance on the appropriate level of rest and gradually introduce activities as symptoms subside, promoting a safe and timely recovery.

Physical Therapy for Concussion

In collaboration with coaches, athletic trainers, and physicians, physical therapists play a vital role in the rehabilitation process following a sports-related concussion. At Trifecta Therapeutics, our clinicians utilize evidence-based management strategies including manual therapy, exercise therapy, vestibular rehab, and more to support the athlete’s recovery and maximize outcomes. Our physical therapy program aims to:

  • Decrease pain: Head injuries may be accompanied by neck pain and headaches that can significantly impact an athletes performance, quality of life, and mental well-being. We utilize strategies including manual therapy and neuromuscular re-education to diagnose and treat pain at the source.

  • Restore Balance and Coordination: Some athletes may have deficits in balance and coordination, potentially leading to a protracted recovery and impaired performance. Through targeted management, we help athletes restore their proprioception and dynamic balance.

  • Improve Vestibular Function: Vestibular rehabilitation is a key component of our physical therapy program. By addressing issues with the vestibular system, we can address headaches, dizziness, and balance deficits. Skilled management can enhance the athlete’s ability to react, maintain balance, focus, and track objects during competition.

  • Enhance Strength and Endurance: We design individualized exercise programs that focus on maintaining or building strength/power. Our clinicians guide athletes through a progressive regimen to safely regain physical capabilities and improve overall fitness that is specific to his/her sport.

  • Improve mental/emotional health: Going through an injury can be emotionally and mentally taxing on top of the physical components. Having a support system while you rehabilitate is crucial. This is especially important for student athletes after a concussive event when school and social life can be altered. At Trifecta, we value our 1:1 approach to patient management and endorse a biopsychosocial approach to care. In other words, we take care of you as a person and an athlete, not just a number!

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is an extremely valuable tool in concussion management, aiding in the recovery process by addressing neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions and alleviating symptoms including neck pain, headaches, and dizziness.

Trifecta Therapeutics offers skilled manual therapy services to complement our comprehensive approach. Our clinicians are highly trained in hands-on techniques such as joint mobilizations, spinal manipulation, dry needling, and soft tissue mobilizations to reduce pain and alleviate symptoms associated with concussions.

Return to Sport

Returning to sport after a concussion requires a careful and individualized approach. At Trifecta Therapeutics, we prioritize the safe and gradual return to physical activity, ensuring athletes are ready to compete without compromising safety.

At Trifecta, we consider specific factors such as symptom resolution, cognitive function, balance, coordination, and sport-specific skills before clearing athletes to return to sport. We follow a step-wise return to sport progression and we include various tests and activities to help in this decision making, including but not limited to:

  • Exertional Tolerance testing or Buffalo Treadmill/Bike Testing

  • Visual Oculomotor screen (VOMS)

  • Sport-specific movements and training

  • Psychological readiness to return to sport
