Residency/Fellowship Training: The Trifecta Difference
If you follow us on social media, you have probably heard us mention residency training and fellowship training at one time or another. We understand the importance of furthering our education, but what does it mean to YOU. Why does it matter that we are participating in these continuing education programs and what impact will it have on the patient’s experience?
Why does it matter?
Taking on a fellowship/residency program is a commitment to higher education and personal development. Through these experiences, clinicians are taking an initiative to further their education to improve upon important skills required for physical therapists. Dr. Boyd and I strive to improve our education to improve our assessments, improve our treatments, and improve the overall patient/client experience. We do this for you!
In order to sit for a board certification exam, candidates require multiple years of experience and show a commitment to evidence based practice. By earning a board certification, it denotes that we have undergone extensive training and preparation to improve patient outcomes and critical thinking in the clinic. Our goal is to be the best, and help our clients be the best they can be on and off the field.
What is a Residency/Fellowship?
After completing an accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy program, graduates are eligible to sit and take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). Passing this examination and gaining licensure means that the graduate is competent and able to begin practicing as an entry level physical therapist in any variety of settings (i.e. sports, orthopedics, neuromuscular, acute care, pediatrics, etc.).
Those graduates who choose to further their education and specialize may begin residency training at any one of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) accredited residency programs. These programs come in many shapes and sizes, but the underlying concept remains the same: developing clinical expertise through mentorship, didactic knowledge, review of the latest evidence, and hands-on skilled training.
Dr. Hanus is currently enrolled in Temple University’s Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency program and will sit for his board certification exam in 2021.
Fellowship is a step-up from residency training and reserved for the best and brightest clinicians who aspire to be experts in the field. These advanced clinicians undergo fellowship training to further specialize and to become leaders in their specialty area.
Dr. Boyd completed an orthopedic residency at Temple University and has received board certification in both Orthopedics and Sports Physical Therapy. He is currently enrolled in a Sports and Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship with the Institute for Athlete Regeneration.
